Building a Strong Board of Directors
Prior to the Fire Museum Capital Campaign the Board consisted of five executive committee members and an advisory group. In the fall of 2006, the Board undertook a review of its Code of Regulations so that any necessary changes could be made in anticipation of the Capital Campaign. As part of this process, the Board reviewed example codes provided by the American Association of Museums as well as codes from other Fire Museums and non-profit organizations. The Board also asked an officer of a very well regarded local non-profit organization to review the Fire Museum’s existing Code of Regulations. The conclusion was that the Fire Museum’s Code of Regulations should be changed to follow the same pattern set by other Museums and Historical Societies. These changes were approved and have put the Fire Museum in a much better position to attract new funding sources for both the capital campaign and the annual operating fund. Chief among the changes made was a restructuring of the Board.
The Board now consists of no less than 5 members and no more than 25. Terms are three years and staggered to maintain a continuity of leadership. Four standing committees were added: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Development Committee, and Nominating Committee. To fill the Board a major recruitment effort is underway.
